GrabCab Hits Singapore Roads: New Taxi Service Launches with High-Tech Features

AD

Singapore's transport scene just got more exciting! Starting this July, commuters can wave down the all-new GrabCab taxis on the streets, marking Grab's official entry into Singapore's taxi industry as the sixth operator.

The fresh-faced service kicks off with a fleet of 40 cutting-edge fifth-generation Toyota Prius electric hybrids. But that's just the beginning - Grab plans to expand its lineup soon with models like the Hyundai Kona hybrid, working toward meeting Singapore's 800-vehicle minimum fleet requirement. This move puts GrabCab in competition with established players like ComfortDelGro and Trans-Cab.

"We're not just another taxi service," says a Grab spokesperson. "GrabCab enhances ride availability through multiple channels - taxi stands, street hails, and our popular app bookings - while integrating seamlessly with our existing point-to-point services."

These aren't your grandfather's taxis either. Each vehicle comes packed with smart technology including:

  • A state-of-the-art mobile data terminal (that's taxi meter to you and me) fully synced with the Grab Driver app

  • AI-powered dashcams that monitor road conditions and encourage safer driving habits

Price-wise, passengers won't notice much difference from current options. The meter starts at $4.60 for standard sedans, charging $0.26 per 400m for trips under 10km (changing to $0.26 per 350m beyond that). All those pesky surcharges? They match what other companies are charging.

For drivers eyeing these slick new rides, Grab offers some sweet deals:

  • Daily rental packages starting at just $117 (beating most competitors' $115-$135 entry price)

  • Whopping fuel discounts up to 40% at Caltex stations islandwide

  • EV charging discounts reaching 25% at major providers like Charge+ and Shell

  • A cool $1,000 safe driving bonus for accident-free drivers each year

  • $400 support for getting licensed if they're new to taxi driving

"We've already got about 800 interested drivers lined up," reveals Victor Sim from GrabRentals. "After careful screening focusing on safety records and proper licensing, we've selected about half for our initial driver pool." Those without proper credentials get guided toward certification courses.

The big picture? While competitors might see this as a challenge, Sim explains their real goal is bigger: "We want to bring inactive but licensed drivers back behind the wheel nationwide." With these attractive packages and tech-forward approach, they might just succeed in shaking up Singapore's transport landscape while solving driver shortages.
