A Singaporean man recently made headlines after filing a police report over a mistakenly delivered food order left at his doorstep. The incident, which occurred last month, has since ignited discussions online about customer service protocols and public reactions to minor inconveniences.
The man, identified only as Lee, told local media outlet Mothership that he "felt unsafe" upon discovering the unfamiliar food package outside his home. The delivery receipt showed an order from popular noodle chain Tamjai Samgor, including tomato soup noodles, vinegar black fungus and chicken wings - but crucially lacked the intended recipient's address.
After contacting Deliveroo's customer service, Lee was advised to either keep or dispose of the food. Dissatisfied with this response and requesting to speak with a manager led to being placed on hold for five minutes before the call disconnected - prompting him to contact authorities.
"The police officer who responded was very professional," Lee recounted. "They helped me dispose of the food properly." Authorities later confirmed assisting with disposal but noted no offence had been committed requiring investigation.
Lee's attempts for recourse continued through multiple channels. His complaint to the Consumers Association of Singapore (Case) proved unsuccessful as they explained their mandate covers contractual disputes rather than such delivery mishaps.
Deliveroo subsequently acknowledged an operational error caused the misdelivery while citing hygiene regulations preventing collection of already-delivered food items. A company spokesperson told AsiaOne: "We understand customers' concerns when unexpected deliveries occur." They added that some customers specifically request contactless deliveries which can occasionally lead to confusion.
The incident sparked lively debate on social platforms like Reddit where users questioned Lee's extreme response. Comments ranged from "This seems like an overreaction" to jokes about wasting police resources on non-emergencies.
"I'm not seeking compensation - just raising awareness about how delivery mistakes become consumers' problems,"
Lee maintained in his interview with Mothership.
