The motorcyclist featured in a viral video has announced in an interview that he plans to visit the mechanic next week to fully pay for the repair costs.
"This way, he can continue to help more people in need," stated the 31-year-old, known by the surname Qiu (transliteration), to the Malaysian publication Oriental Daily News.
"We share a common goal of spreading positivity and assisting those in need, regardless of their race."
It appears that he is truly embodying this spirit.
In a TikTok post on Monday morning (April 20), Qiu shared photos of himself alongside police officers conducting a roadblock, expressing gratitude for their uplifting support and frontline efforts.
During his interview with Oriental Daily, Qiu, also referred to as Dicky, expressed his appreciation once more for the support from netizens and the mechanic's assistance.
He emphasized his reasons for declining donations: "I am able-bodied, and I still have my hands and legs. Therefore, I want to depend on myself to earn a living."
On the same day, he was also invited for an interview by Malaysian radio station Era FM.
Qiu has been employed at a halal Chinese seafood restaurant in Kuala Lumpur for around seven years after relocating from East Malaysia.
Incident Overview
He was returning to his staff dormitory in Petaling Jaya when his motorcycle broke down around 11:30 PM on April 15.
In his conversation with Oriental Daily, he mentioned that he searched for a motorcycle repairman on social media since it was late and he didn't want to trouble his colleagues or friends.
"When no repairman responded, I felt helpless as it was late and I was alone by the roadside. I panicked a little," he remarked, adding that his motorcycle is vital for his commute to and from work.
After the repairs were done, the mechanic, known on TikTok as @minyakhitamjalanan, refused to accept payment from Qiu after learning that he only had RM176 (approximately S$56) remaining in his e-wallet.
Their exchange has garnered over 5 million views since it was shared on Friday.
