Malaysian citizens holding Singapore driving licences will soon be eligible for the country’s Budi95 fuel subsidy scheme, allowing them to benefit from lower petrol prices when refuelling Malaysia-registered vehicles.
The Budi95 initiative, launching on 30 September, currently enables Malaysian drivers with local MyKad and valid licences to purchase Ron95 petrol at RM1.99 per litre, compared to RM2.60 for non-citizens. Vehicles registered in Singapore or Thailand are only eligible for Ron97 at RM3.21 per litre.
Previously, Malaysians working in Singapore who held Singapore licences were excluded from the scheme due to the separate licence systems, leaving them unable to enjoy the subsidised rates. Following feedback online, Malaysian Transport Minister Anthony Loke confirmed that this group would soon be included, provided they refuel cars registered in Malaysia.
He emphasised that while the subsidy scheme officially begins on 30 September, those with Singapore driving licences will not be left out. The government is implementing measures to ensure that Malaysians commuting to Singapore for work can participate in the Budi95 scheme, allowing them to benefit from lower fuel costs without requiring a Malaysian-issued driving licence.
This adjustment ensures wider accessibility to the subsidy for Malaysian drivers crossing the Causeway, reflecting the government’s effort to address fairness and practicality in the rollout of the Budi95 programme.
