British singer-songwriter James Blunt has revealed he actually welcomes being labeled a "one-hit wonder," saying it helps keep his ego in check. The artist, best known for his 2005 global smash You're Beautiful, shared his refreshing perspective on fame with People magazine.
"In America, I absolutely am considered a one-hit wonder," the 51-year-old musician admitted with characteristic self-deprecating humor. "And you know what? I'm completely fine with that. As I like to say on my social media profiles - one hit is all you really need."
The Grammy-nominated artist went even further, joking: "I've been called a one-hit wonder by plenty of people who are none-hit wonders themselves. So honestly, I take it as quite the compliment!"
Blunt explained how this perception keeps him grounded: "Whenever I might start feeling too full of myself, an American fan can quickly remind me - 'Hey James, remember you're just that little one-hit wonder guy.' And that's actually very healthy for me."
A Rocky Road to Stardom
The former British Army officer opened up about his unlikely path to musical success, revealing how UK record labels initially rejected him due to class prejudice surrounding his posh accent.
"I didn't realize at the time that signing with Linda Perry's Custard Records was basically my last shot," Blunt recalled. "Every UK label had turned me down because of how I spoke and these outdated class perceptions we still deal with here."
The singer acknowledged there might have been some truth to their concerns: "It took years after You're Beautiful's success for people to see past my voice and recognize me as just a normal person. Maybe those labels weren't completely wrong - but thank goodness Linda Perry saw something they didn't." He fondly remembers celebrating their deal by going out drinking together.
Trolling the Trolls With Humor
Despite (or perhaps because of) his massive success with You're Beautiful - which topped charts worldwide and earned Grammy nominations - Blunt has faced significant criticism over the years. He's developed a reputation for hilariously clapping back at detractors on social media.
P)"I've always had this silly side," he explained when asked about his witty online persona. "Early in my career, I probably took interviews too seriously when talking about music because it meant so much to me." P)The singer continued: These days while still pouring my heart into songwriting,I've learned not discuss it so earnestly. That approach seems work better bothfor meandmy audience. pBlunts refreshing honestyaboutthemusicindustryhisowncareercontinuestoendearhimtofansworldwideprovingthatwhilehemayjokeaboutbeingaonehitwonderhistalentandstayingpowerareno laughingmatter.
