Ramadan, the holy month of fasting, reflection, and charity, is fast approaching in the UAE. While the exact dates depend on the sighting of the crescent moon, early astronomical predictions provide a reliable guide for planning.
During Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn to sunset, engage in spiritual reflection, and perform acts of charity. The month’s start is confirmed only after the new crescent moon is sighted, as with all months in the Islamic calendar.
According to Dubai’s Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department (IACAD), Ramadan 2026 is expected to begin between February 17 and 19, with February 18 most likely marking the first day of fasting. One of the most significant nights of the month, Laylat al-Qadr (the Night of Power), is anticipated on Tuesday night, March 17, 2026. This night commemorates the revelation of the Quran and is a time of intensive prayer and seeking forgiveness.
Ramadan is projected to conclude on Thursday, March 19, with Eid Al Fitr following on Friday, March 20. In the UAE, the first three days of Shawwal—the month immediately after Ramadan—are observed as public holidays. The exact holiday duration could be extended if Ramadan lasts 30 days, providing families with an extended festive period.
The timing of Ramadan also coincides with school spring breaks, allowing families to celebrate together. Private schools in Dubai will start spring break on March 16 and resume classes on March 30, while Ministry of Education (MOE) schools will observe spring break from March 16 to March 29. This overlap gives residents the chance to enjoy the final days of Ramadan and the start of Eid celebrations as a long holiday weekend.
