As Diwali 2026 draws near, the narrow streets of Dubai’s Gold Souq are once again glowing with excitement. Shoppers weave through shimmering displays of bangles, coins, and necklaces, their reflections flickering in the glass cases. But this year, there’s a quiet shift happening — not in enthusiasm, but in strategy.
Despite gold hovering around record highs, festive buyers in Dubai are showing remarkable adaptability. The latest market data shows 24K gold trading near Dh510 per gram, while 22K stands close to Dh473 — making this one of the most expensive Diwali seasons in recent years. Yet, the energy in the market remains unmistakably upbeat, with retailers reporting steady footfall and strong pre-bookings.
The reason? For many, gold isn’t just a luxury — it’s tradition. “These occasions carry deep emotional value,” explained Dr. Joy Alukkas, Chairman of Joyalukkas Group. “Gold continues to symbolize prosperity and joy, especially during festivals like Diwali and Dhanteras. That cultural attachment doesn’t fade, no matter the price.”
What has changed is the style of buying. Across Dubai, jewellers are noticing a clear trend toward lighter, more versatile pieces — a reflection of both modern lifestyles and smart spending. Instead of ornate, heavy sets, many shoppers now prefer minimalistic earrings, delicate bracelets, or slim necklaces that can be worn every day.
“Customers today are budget-conscious but not discouraged,” said Ramesh Kalyanaraman, Executive Director at Kalyan Jewellers. “They still view gold as a long-term investment and a key part of celebrations, but within carefully planned budgets. Lighter designs and pre-booking options make this possible.”
Younger buyers, in particular, are gravitating toward chic, Italian-inspired creations that weigh as little as half a gram. Retailers like Bafleh Jewellery say this new wave of designs caters perfectly to modern preferences — affordable, stylish, and full of emotional meaning. “Lightweight is the new statement,” said Viraj Shah, the company’s General Manager.
For gift-givers, practicality is leading the way. Instead of grand jewellery sets, smaller pendants, coins, and minimalist charms have become the go-to choice. These pieces carry the same sentiment but at a fraction of the cost — a smart way to keep traditions alive without overspending.
Even as average buyers adapt, luxury shoppers show no signs of slowing down. Exclusive boutiques across Dubai report brisk sales of statement pieces adorned with diamonds and coloured gemstones. “There’s continued demand for opulent, one-of-a-kind designs,” said Nishith Shah, CEO of La Marquise Fine Jewellery. “For many, these purchases represent both beauty and investment.”
Market analysts expect gold prices to remain strong through the end of 2026, driven by global factors and consistent year-end demand. Still, jewellers remain optimistic. “Every Diwali season has its rhythm,” said Arjun Dhanak, Director at Kanz Jewels. “Even when prices rise, people find a way to celebrate — that’s the power of tradition.”
And so, under Dubai’s golden shop lights, Diwali’s spirit shines as brightly as ever. The price of gold may have soared, but its emotional value — woven into every festival, every family, and every celebration — remains truly priceless.
