Since the introduction of variable parking tariffs in April by Parkin, many Dubai residents have been rethinking their commutes to keep costs under control. With peak-hour rates climbing to Dh6 for the first hour, drivers are finding creative ways to avoid unnecessary expenses while still getting around the city with ease.
A recent Gulf News survey revealed that 67% of UAE residents believe tolls and parking fees weigh heavily on their monthly budgets. In response, commuters are reshaping habits—whether by taking longer routes to avoid Salik, combining public transport with driving, or even shifting to remote work.
Smart savings at malls For some, the solution lies in small but consistent habits. Olga Sukhanova, founder of COLABB, makes it a point to always ask for parking validation at cafés, offices, or service centres. “It’s a simple step that saves money regularly,” she explained.
Several malls also offer free parking within limits. Mall of the Emirates and Deira City Centre, for instance, provide up to three to four free hours, with extensions available for shoppers who spend above Dh150 or head to the cinema. Weekends remain free of charge at these destinations. Dubai Mall’s barrier-free system, managed by Salik, allows up to four free hours on weekdays and six on weekends.
Switching to public transport For long-time resident and entrepreneur Mita Srinivasan, the smartest decision was giving up her car altogether. “Between Salik, parking fees, and maintenance, driving had become more expensive than fuel. Now, I use the Metro or ride-hailing apps for meetings and errands,” she said. Srinivasan added that commuting this way is less stressful and allows her to use travel time productively.
Making use of Park and Ride Some commuters are turning to RTA’s Park and Ride facilities at Metro stations like Centrepoint, Etisalat by e&, and Jabal Ali. By tagging in with a nol card, drivers enjoy free multi-storey parking and continue their journey by train. One Emirates employee who has lived in Dubai for seven years said the system helps him cut down both parking costs and driving stress.
Timing trips strategically Others prefer timing their outings to bypass higher charges. Jerry Joseph, a Syrian expatriate born and raised in Deira, said, “If I’m heading to Downtown or JBR, I’ll usually take the Metro. But if I drive, I go after 8pm, so I only pay for one hour and can stay out longer without added costs.”
Joseph added that while paid parking is common in his neighbourhood, finding available spaces can be a challenge. He suggested that Dubai could consider Abu Dhabi’s resident-only parking system for busy residential areas, which he believes would significantly ease the burden.
The bottom line From mall validations to Metro-linked parking and off-peak travel, Dubai residents are proving that with a little planning, it’s possible to keep mobility affordable. As the city evolves, these everyday strategies are helping commuters balance convenience with cost savings.
