UAE Leads the Way in Safeguarding Entry-Level Jobs Amid AI Disruption

AD

While the rise of generative AI tools like ChatGPT has disrupted entry-level hiring in many parts of the world, the UAE is emerging as a notable exception—actively investing in junior talent and reshaping how early-career opportunities are created.

According to LinkedIn’s Economic Graph for April 2026, hiring for entry-level roles in the UAE soared by 70 per cent—well above the country’s overall hiring growth and in stark contrast to declines seen across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America (EMEAL). This growth suggests that the UAE is doubling down on its commitment to building a robust future workforce.

This comes at a time when a global shift is underway. A study by job search platform Adzuna revealed that since the release of ChatGPT in November 2022, junior and entry-level job listings have dropped by roughly one-third. Automation is taking over many routine functions, pushing recent graduates to acquire more advanced and versatile skill sets.

Najat Abdalhadi, a career expert at LinkedIn, explains: “Globally, the unemployment rate among fresh graduates has climbed 30 per cent since late 2022, compared to an 18 per cent rise for the general workforce. However, the UAE’s forward-looking labour policies have softened the impact. The focus now must be on developing uniquely human capabilities—like critical thinking and cross-functional collaboration—which AI cannot replicate.”

She adds that this shift presents a chance for the UAE to serve as a model for other countries. “If this momentum is channelled into nurturing sustainable, future-proof skills, the UAE could lead the global conversation on harmonising AI adoption with inclusive workforce development.”

Mayank Patel, senior vice-president of Adecco and head of Eastern Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EEMEA), believes the UAE offers a more balanced picture compared to global trends. “AI is undoubtedly reshaping roles, but in the UAE, economic diversification and sector growth—particularly in logistics, hospitality, retail, and construction—are fuelling demand for junior roles like warehouse assistants, sales reps, and front-desk staff,” he said.

Patel points out that we’re seeing transformation, not elimination, of junior positions. “Routine tasks are now being enhanced by AI, freeing up employees to focus on more strategic work. This shift is also opening doors for upskilling initiatives, especially for young people who may not hold formal degrees.”

Rather than phasing out junior jobs, employers in the UAE are rethinking traditional pathways like internships and graduate schemes. These programmes are increasingly aligned with real-world needs, offering training in digital literacy, AI, data analysis, and hybrid workplace skills.

LinkedIn’s recent data also underscores the scale of AI’s reach. Among 500 job-related skills studied, 96 per cent of those linked to software engineering—mostly programming-based—can potentially be automated by generative AI. This raises serious questions about how new graduates can build meaningful career trajectories in such evolving fields.

Patel notes that white-collar roles have been most affected by AI—especially those that involve high volumes of content processing, such as customer support agents, writers, and data entry staff. “Rather than making these jobs obsolete, AI is handling the repetitive aspects, allowing people to concentrate on value-added work that requires human insight, creativity, and empathy,” he said. “This marks the beginning of a new era of human-machine collaboration.”

In the face of change, the UAE is leaning into opportunity. By prioritising upskilling, flexible pathways, and inclusive hiring practices, the country is showing how entry-level careers can not only survive but thrive in the age of AI.
