Christa Moreau, a French writer, photographer, and mother of two, has crafted a unique children's book that blends her expertise in perfumery with her passion for storytelling. After graduating from ISIPCA - France's prestigious perfumery school - she spent ten years working with luxury beauty brands across Paris, London, Berlin and Singapore before making Dubai her home. Her debut children's book, The Perfume of Roses, beautifully merges these diverse experiences into an enchanting tale.
Designed for young readers aged three to eight, this heartwarming story follows Mounia, a compassionate Moroccan girl who forms an extraordinary friendship with a visually impaired visitor. Through their adventures in the fragrant Moroccan countryside, children discover the magic of Damask roses - one of perfumery's most prized ingredients - while learning about friendship and cultural understanding.
The Inspiration Behind the Story
"During my travels documenting rare fragrance ingredients worldwide," Moreau explains, "I became captivated by the stories hidden within these aromatic landscapes." The book was born from her unforgettable journey to Morocco's Valley of Roses during harvest season. "The air heavy with rose petals, the vibrant colors, and the welcoming community created sensory memories I wanted to share," she recalls.
A Sensory Adventure Unlike Any Other
"The Perfume of Roses offers something truly special in children's literature," says Moreau. While most books engage sight and hearing through pictures and words,Mine invites young readers on an olfactory adventure." The story celebrates our often-overlooked sense of smell while transporting readers to rural Morocco through vivid descriptions. Beyond its sensory focus, the book serves as a colorful introduction to Moroccan culture.Traditional customs, the breathtaking landscape, and daily village life unfold through Mounia’s eyes, making distant places feel familiar. The valley setting plays more than just scenery—it becomes a character itself. The connection between people, nature, and tradition comes alive through details like women singing Berber songs while harvesting petals or families gathering at day’s end. Illustrator Sally Walker brought this world to life using Moreau’s original photographs as reference."Sally perfectly captured not just the valley’s colors but its magical light—from soft dawn hues to golden sunsets that make every page glow,"Moreau praises. At its heart, the story carries important messages about diversity, friendship across differences, and environmental appreciation.Moreau hopes it will inspire young readers both culturally and ecologically:"Maybe some will visit Morocco themselves one day or develop greater care for our planet." Looking ahead, the author plans more global adventures:"Each new book will explore another country through local children’s eyes, focusing on unique natural treasures."These future stories promise similar blends sensory discovery cultural exploration letting armchair travelers experience world wonders page after page.
