As the Venetian sun stretches daylight hours in May, crowds flock to the prestigious Venice Biennale's twin hubs - Giardini and Arsenale. This year's 19th International Architecture Exhibition, often dubbed "the Olympics of architecture," unveiled its treasures on May 10, showcasing cultural masterpieces from approximately 66 nations. Among them, the UAE makes a striking return with its thought-provoking national pavilion titled "Pressure Cooker," continuing its tradition of award-winning presentations since 2014.
The Salama bint Hamdan Al Nahyan Foundation-commissioned pavilion, supported by the UAE Ministry of Culture, tackles pressing global issues through an architectural lens: sustainable agriculture practices, innovative greenhouse designs, and climate adaptation strategies for arid regions. Curated by architect and academic Azza Aboualam - marking her historic role as the first Emirati woman to curate the UAE's architectural pavilion - the exhibition transforms traditional notions of food production into spatial poetry.
A Mother's Surprise That Grew Into Architectural Innovation
The project's genesis came from a simple domestic moment. "When my mother tasted locally-grown desert blueberries in our Dubai home, her disbelief sparked everything," Aboualam reveals. "'These must come from greenhouses!' she exclaimed. That casual remark made me examine how we perceive agricultural spaces in extreme climates."
Moving beyond purely technical approaches to greenhouse design common in UAE agricultural studies, Aboualam and her team reimagined these structures as dynamic architectural compositions that respond poetically to their environment while solving practical challenges of sunlight management and water conservation.
Where Agriculture Meets Art: The Exhibition Experience
"Pressure Cooker presents three modular greenhouse configurations we designed," explains Aboualam about her collaboration with Holesum Studio. "Each explores different architectural variables—roof angles that manipulate shade patterns; wall heights affecting interior microclimates; material selections impacting thermal performance—while showcasing regional crops demonstrating what's possible."
The curator describes greenhouses as metaphorical sanctuaries where ideas germinate alongside plants: "They represent protected spaces for transformation—not unlike creative processes themselves. Our exhibition frames them as 'third spaces' where architecture facilitates environmental adaptation through careful design interventions."
Rethinking Food Security Through Design Intelligence
"The UAE imports about [percentage]% of its food supply," notes Aboualam when discussing regional challenges. "Our research suggests small-scale adaptive systems could complement existing solutions like vertical farming or hydroponics by integrating spatial intelligence with agricultural technology." During extensive field visits across Emirates farms documented in the exhibition materials she observed both traditional falaj irrigation wisdom coexisting with cutting-edge controlled-environment agriculture experiments.
Climate Parallels Between Desert and Lagoon Ecosystems
"Venice shares surprising vulnerabilities with Gulf regions despite their apparent differences", observes Abuallam pointing out how both locations historically depended on complex logistics networks for sustenance – whether Venetian boats transporting produce or container ships supplying Gulf supermarkets The exhibition intentionally incorporates local Venetian materials including rammed earth walls pigmented by regional sands creating subtle dialogues between distant geographies facing similar climate pressures< P
