Summer vacation plans clashing with work schedules? Many employees face the frustrating situation where their leave requests get rejected because colleagues have already booked the same dates. What does UAE labor law say about your right to take annual leave?
In the UAE, employers have the authority to determine annual leave schedules based on business needs and operational requirements. However, this doesn't mean they can arbitrarily deny all your vacation requests. The law establishes clear guidelines that both employers and employees must follow.
According to Article 29 (4) of Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 (UAE Employment Law), companies must inform employees about their approved leave dates at least one month in advance. The provision states: "The employee shall use his leave in the year of entitlement. The employer may fix the dates of leave according to the work requirements and in agreement with the employee, or rotate leaves among employees for the smooth progress of work."

The law also protects employees from being indefinitely denied their accumulated leave days. Article 29 (8) specifies: "The employer may not prevent the employee from benefiting from his annual leave accrued for more than two years unless the employee wishes to carry it forward or receive a cash allowance for it." This means your company cannot permanently block you from taking earned vacation time.
What Can You Do If Your Leave Gets Rejected?
Discuss alternative dates: Approach your manager with flexible options that might better suit business needs while still allowing you time off.
Understand operational constraints: Recognize that during peak periods or when multiple team members are away, companies need to maintain productivity. Splitting your vacation: Consider breaking your holiday into shorter segments if continuous time off isn't feasible. Catch up before leaving: Offer solutions like completing critical tasks in advance to minimize disruption during your absence.
